All throughout Europe, the livery chain, or Chain of Office was a mark of royal office, worn by men (and some women) to proclaim high officer or other honors. Knights, Dukes, Kings, and those honored by the monarch wore these elaborate chains to make clear to the court their high standing and proclaim their royal office.
